Nderit Estate, Kenya

On the shores of lake Naivasha, the 500-acre Nderit estate is a visionary combination of wildlife sanctuary and retreat, created by Michael and Dodo Cunningham-Reid. Its most striking feature is Dodo's Tower, an eight-storey pagoda clad in Kenyan cypress, with wood-panelled interiors and country-house furnishings. Guests can also stay at the 10-room Hippo Manor, a Thirties mock-Tudor home that is quintessential England in Africa. Hippo, giraffes, impala and zebra are some of the game-viewing treats, and many visitors come here to relax after safaris in the Maasai Mara. Horse-riding, cycling, holistic treatments and even water-skiing are available, and guests are given unrestricted access to the entire property.
