Lake Naivasha, one of the few fresh water lakes in the Kenya
Rift Valley, is situated a beautifully scenic hour's run from
Nairobi, at an altitude of 6,200 ft.
It is roughly circular in shape with vast papyrus swamps to
the North, and a small bay, Oloidien Bay, today called the
small lake, in its South West corner.
Hippo Point is situated on the green isthmus that separates
the two lakes.
The approximate North-South distance of lake Naivasha is eight
miles and the SW-NE distance is thirteen miles, which gives
an area of approximately 75 square miles. The small lake, Oloidien
Bay, is about seven miles round. |
It takes half an hour to get by car from Naivasha town
to Hippo Point estate, taking first the South Lake Road all
along the big lake until the end, and then circumventing
the small lake after reaching Kongoni.
There is no public access to the small lake. After Kongoni
the tarmac ends and the remainder of the road is through
private farmland on a rough and dusty road.
